Lancaster County has nearly 30 surviving covered bridges, more than any other county in Pennsylvania. Most still carry one lane of traffic, and many sit close enough together to visit several in a single drive.

This guide groups the 20 public Lancaster County bridges in our directory into four driving loops by area. Each loop lists its bridges in a sensible order to drive them, with a map link for every stop. Every bridge here uses a Burr arch truss.

Quick facts

Northern loop: Conestoga River and Cocalico Creek

Eight bridges north of Lancaster city, between Manheim Township, Lititz and Ephrata. This is the biggest cluster in the county. Start at Hunsecker's Mill and Pinetown, two long spans over the Conestoga only a short drive apart, then work north and east. Bitzer's Mill and Pool Forge are closed to cars but open to walkers.

Other Lancaster County bridges

Herr's Mill Covered Bridge, a rare two-span bridge from 1844, stood over Pequea Creek on Ronks Road in Paradise Township until 2018, when it was taken apart and moved to the private Stone Gables Estate in Elizabethtown. It is on private property.

A few more Lancaster County covered bridges are not in our directory yet. Landis Mill, Schenck's Mill, Siegrist's Mill and Weaver's Mill can be seen from public roads. Shearer's, in Manheim Memorial Park, and Willow Hill, beside Route 30 east of Lancaster, are open to walkers only. Buck Hill and Red Run are on private land.

Tips for visiting

  • Pull off with care. Many bridges have little or no parking. Use gravel pull-offs where they exist and never block traffic or driveways.
  • Share the road. The back roads around these bridges carry Amish buggies, so drive slowly, especially on the Pequea Creek loop.
  • Mind one-lane spans. Most of these bridges carry a single lane. Take turns with oncoming traffic.
  • Respect private land. Several bridges sit beside private farms and homes. Stay on the road and obey posted signs.
  • Get the official guide. Discover Lancaster offers a downloadable covered bridges tour guide.
