Cedar Covered Bridge

Cedar Covered Bridge

Madison County, near Winterset. Built 2019 (originally 1883), 76 ft over Cedar Creek. Also called Casper Bridge, rebuilt after two arson fires.

Town Lattice

The Cedar Covered Bridge, also known as the Casper Bridge, crosses Cedar Creek northeast of Winterset in Madison County, Iowa. The original 1883 span used a Town lattice truss and gained fame as the bridge pictured on the cover of the novel The Bridges of Madison County. It was destroyed by arson in 2002, rebuilt, then burned again in 2017 and reconstructed once more in 2019. The original bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, though it was removed from the register following its destruction. Today the rebuilt bridge remains a popular tourist attraction in the county's collection of covered bridges.
