Kevin Mundy Memorial Bridge

Kevin Mundy Memorial Bridge crosses Bridger Creek near the trailhead of the popular Drinking Horse Mountain Trail just northeast of Bozeman, built to honor Kevin Mundy, a Bozeman native and Bridger Bowl ski patrolman who died in 2005 at age 26 while a student at Montana State University. Rather than a simple plaque or bench, the community chose to build a genuine covered bridge in his memory — a project representing roughly $140,000 in donated design, engineering, materials, and labor from more than 150 local donors and businesses.

Built on-site by local craftsmen using Montana timber milled in the Gallatin Valley, the 50-foot covered bridge includes bench seating so visitors can pause and take in Bridger Creek, and it doubles as an outdoor classroom for the Montana Outdoor Science School. The project's craftsmanship earned it real recognition beyond the local community: a 2009 Bozeman Beautification Award, a 2009 Montana AIA Honor Award, a 2010 AIA National Small Projects Merit Award, and a 2010 ACEC Montana Engineering Excellence Award. It stands today as proof that a covered bridge doesn't need 19th-century origins to become a genuinely meaningful local landmark.
