Newland School Road, East Finley Township, Washington County, PASprowls Covered Bridge
Sprowls Covered Bridge, also written Sprowl's, crosses Rocky Run on Newland School Road in East Finley Township, Washington County. It sits on a gravel township road in a secluded rural valley. It is a different bridge from the Wyit Sprowls Covered Bridge.
The bridge was built in 1875; its builder and most of its history are unknown. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 22, 1979, as part of the Covered Bridges of Washington and Greene Counties listing. In 2000 the bridge was temporarily closed because of damage linked to nearby mining, after its truss twisted and its abutments cracked, and it was then repaired. It has not been moved.
Sprowls is a kingpost truss bridge. Coveredbridges.net lists an overall length of about 36 feet, a largest span of 26.9 feet, an overall width of 12 feet 7 inches and 12 feet of vertical clearance above the deck.
The county owns and maintains the bridge, which is open to vehicles. From SR 3035, about 1.5 miles from its junction with PA 231 in East Finley, Newland School Road leads east about 100 feet to the bridge.
