Sinking Creek Covered Bridge
Giles County, near Newport. Built ca. 1916, 70 ft. long. Also known as the Clover Hollow Bridge, now the centerpiece of a restored wayside and wedding venue.
The Sinking Creek Covered Bridge, sometimes called the Clover Hollow Bridge, was built around 1916 by a builder recorded only as Wingo, carrying a single bow-arched Burr truss across Sinking Creek on stone abutments. It's one of three covered bridges that once stood within a few miles of each other in Giles County, alongside the Link Farm and C.K. Reynolds bridges, all crossing branches of the same creek.
The bridge lost its job as a road crossing in 1963, when a new bridge went up just upstream to carry regular traffic, leaving the old covered span for pedestrian use. It fell into disrepair over the following decades until the Newport Town Council completed a two-year restoration in 2000, returning its weatherboarded walls and gabled roof to condition. Today it's maintained by Giles County as a wayside park and a popular wedding venue, sitting just off Route 601 between Routes 42 and 700, north of Route 460.
