Green Sergeant's Covered Bridge

Green Sergeant's Covered Bridge crosses Wickecheoke Creek near the border between the Hunterdon Plateau and the Amwell Valley in Delaware Township, and it holds a singular distinction: it's the last historic covered bridge remaining anywhere in New Jersey. Built in 1872 and designed by Charles Ogden Holcombe of nearby Lambertville, the 84-foot Queen truss bridge takes its name from the Sergeant family, prominent early landowners along the creek.

The bridge was actually torn down once, in 1960, when the county deemed it obsolete — only for public outcry to force its reconstruction using much of the original material soon after, a rare case of a demolished covered bridge being brought back from the brink. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 for its engineering and transportation significance, Green Sergeant's Bridge remains a beloved rural landmark in the Hunterdon County countryside, a lone survivor representing what was once a modest but real covered bridge tradition in New Jersey.
