Coldwater Covered Bridge

Calhoun County, Oxford (Oxford Lake Park). Built c. 1850, 63 ft. long. Alabama's oldest covered bridge, known as a "kissing bridge," NRHP listed.

Believed to have been built around 1850, potentially as early as 1839, with tradition suggesting construction by a former slave. It is currently the oldest covered bridge in Alabama. Originally, the 63-foot bridge spanned Coldwater Creek, about 8 miles east of its current location, providing a crucial crossing over a creek prone to rapid flooding. The design is a Multiple Open King Post through Truss. It earned the affectionate moniker "kissing bridge" as it offered courting couples a moment of privacy. Around 1920, it suffered partial fire damage but was repaired and continued service until a modern concrete bridge replaced it. Subsequently, the bridge fell into disrepair. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, even in its deteriorated state. In 1990, community efforts led to its relocation to Oxford Lake Park in Oxford, where it was restored. It now crosses the outlet of Oxford Lake and is integrated into a public walking trail.
