The Charles Holliday Covered Bridge is a 96-foot multiple Kingpost structure that was the last covered bridge standing in Walnut Township. Built in the late 1890s by prolific bridge builder J.W. Buchanan, it originally crossed Walnut Creek on Lake Road.
History of Charles Holliday Covered Bridge
Built in the late 1890s by J.W. Buchanan, who was responsible for many of Fairfield County's covered bridges, this structure served Walnut Township for decades. In 1982, the bridge was reconstructed at its current location on the Millersport Lions Club Sweet Corn Festival Grounds, saving it from destruction while giving it a new purpose as a festival landmark.
Architecture and Design
The bridge features multiple Kingpost truss construction, a design using several vertical posts between the top and bottom chords with diagonal bracing. At 96 feet, it demonstrates the capability of this truss type for medium spans. The reconstruction preserved the original design and materials where possible.
Visiting Charles Holliday Covered Bridge
The bridge is located at 2905 Chautauqua Boulevard in Millersport on the Sweet Corn Festival grounds. While the festival in late August is the best time to visit for activities, the bridge can be viewed year-round. The scenic Buckeye Lake area offers additional attractions nearby.
