Cabin Creek Covered Bridge

Cabin Creek Covered Bridge spans Cabin Creek about 4.5 miles northwest of Tollesboro, and its early history is tangled enough that historians still argue over who actually built it. Fiscal Court records credit "a Mr. Bryant of Ohio" — likely Josiah Bryant, a noted covered-bridge builder from Brown County, Ohio — while a family letter from the 1970s insists local landowner William Henderson built it himself. Whoever raised it, the bridge went up on a Burr truss frame around 1867, and around 1914 builder Louis Bower reinforced the structure by adding an arch to each side, requiring new skew-back supports where the arches meet the abutments. The absence of siding under the eaves gives the full 114-foot span a distinctive clerestory effect, letting light run the length of the bridge's interior.

The bridge carried vehicle traffic until 1983, when it was finally closed and left for pedestrian use only. It sat in that state for decades before undergoing a full restoration between 2012 and 2014 by Arnold M. Graton Associates of New Hampshire, a firm known for traditional timber-frame bridge work. Cabin Creek is now owned by the Commonwealth of Kentucky and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, one of eleven authentic covered bridges left standing in the state.
