Biedler Farm Covered Bridge
Rockingham County, near New Market. Built 1896, 93 ft. long. One of the oldest covered bridges remaining in Virginia, privately owned on farmland.
Biedler Farm Covered Bridge was built by Daniel Biedler in 1896 (some older county records cite 1888) to cross Smith Creek on his family's farmland near New Market, and it remains standing on private land to this day. At 93 feet, it's one of the longer surviving covered bridges in Virginia and, alongside Humpback, one of the oldest — a multiple kingpost frame reinforced with a Burr arch, a common pairing for late-19th-century farm bridges that needed to be both cheap to build and strong enough for wagon loads.
Unlike Virginia's other five surviving covered bridges, Biedler Farm was never converted into a public wayside or tourist stop. It sits down a private lane off Bo's Way, an old section of Route 796 near the Route 211 interchange with Interstate 81, and is visible only from a distance since it remains active farm property. It has stayed in something close to its original form for over a century, a working reminder that not every covered bridge became a landmark — some just kept doing the job they were built for.
