About
The AM Foster Covered Bridge stands on private land on Cabot Plains Road in Cabot, on a high plateau. It is a modern covered bridge, built in 1988, with a 40-foot queenpost truss. It does not carry a road or cross a stream: it spans a pond on the property, and it is not open to the public.
History
The Vermont Covered Bridge Society credits the bridge to builders Spaulding, Blondine and Foster and dates it to 1988. It is a replica of the Martin Covered Bridge, a farm bridge built around 1890 over the Winooski River in Marshfield. Because it is privately owned and was never part of a public road, it has no state bridge number.
Design
The queenpost truss uses two vertical posts linked by a horizontal beam, a common design for short spans in Vermont. The bridge's truss is 40 feet long.
Visiting
The bridge is on private land beside Cabot Plains Road, and photographers who visit are asked to stay on the road. It looks west toward the Green Mountains, including Camels Hump and Mount Mansfield. Plains Cemetery is across the road.
