History of White Covered Bridge
While a 1990 state survey determined White Covered Bridge was built in 1900, other sources including local residents clearly remember it being built around 1919. The bridge was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. It has been an annual Covered Bridge Festival site since 2002 and received a historical marker from the William G. Pomeroy Foundation in 2019. The bridge may be named after Whiteley Creek or simply after its white color.
Architecture and Design
At 77 feet and 6 inches, White Covered Bridge is the longest covered bridge in Greene County. It features an exceptionally high Queenpost Truss structure with a clearance of 17 feet and 6 inches—unusual since most covered bridges have height restrictions under 10 feet. This gives the bridge an expansive feel when walking through. The bridge has vertical tongue-and-groove siding, a sheet metal gable roof, and is supported by eight steel beams.
