About Sells Covered Bridge
The Sells Covered Bridge, also known as the Roller Mill Covered Bridge, represents the preserved heritage of Columbiana County's covered bridge history. Originally built in 1878 to cross the West Fork of Little Beaver Creek, this Multiple Kingpost truss structure now stands proudly in Scenic Vista Park southwest of Lisbon, Ohio. The bridge measures approximately 48-50 feet long and 12 feet wide.
History of Sells Covered Bridge
The original Sells Covered Bridge was constructed in 1878 on Laughlin Mill Road to span the West Fork of Little Beaver Creek. Robinson and McCracken built this Multiple Kingpost structure with a metal roof and cut stone abutments, making it strong enough to support a 5-ton load. The bridge served the community for over a century before being destroyed by fire. In 1988, what remained was removed, and in 1994-1995, the Sells Covered Bridge was rebuilt and relocated to its current home at Scenic Vista Park, where it has been appreciated by visitors ever since.
Architecture and Design
The Sells Covered Bridge features a Multiple Kingpost truss design, one of the most common truss types found in Ohio's historic covered bridges. The original structure was built with a metal roof and cut stone abutments, which was unusual for covered bridges of that era and contributed to its remarkable durability. The rebuilt bridge maintains the historic character and design principles of the original 1878 structure while incorporating modern preservation techniques.
