About Rishel Covered Bridge

Rishel Covered Bridge is the oldest covered bridge in Pennsylvania and possibly the oldest covered bridge still standing in the United States. Built in 1830, this remarkable 121-foot Burr Arch Truss bridge crosses Chillisquaque Creek in a scenic rural setting. The bridge is the longest covered bridge in Northumberland County and remains open to vehicular traffic.

History of Rishel Covered Bridge

The history of the Rishel Bridge dates back even earlier than 1830. An early version of the bridge was built around 1812 but washed out only a few years later. The current bridge was completed in 1830 and has stood the test of time for nearly two centuries. It has been refurbished on several occasions, most recently in 1990. Following flood damage from Tropical Storm Lee in September 2011, when the bridge was pushed six inches off its foundation, Northumberland County spent approximately $150,000 to repair this historic treasure. The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Architecture and Design

The bridge utilizes the Burr Arch Truss design, developed by Theodore Burr in 1804. This design combines a traditional multiple kingpost truss with a superimposed arch, allowing for heavier loads and longer spans. The bridge spans 121 feet (some sources say 110 feet) over Chillisquaque Creek. Like several other covered bridges in the region, Rishel has a height bar located a few feet in front of the bridge to protect overheight vehicles from damaging the structure.

Visiting Rishel Covered Bridge

Rishel Covered Bridge is located in the northern part of Northumberland County on Covered Bridge Road, near Route 147 and about 2 miles east of Montandon. There is a nice pull-off on the southwestern end of the bridge for parking. Be aware that much of the area surrounding the bridge is posted as private property. The bridge sees approximately 25 cars per day and offers a wonderful glimpse into early American bridge engineering.
