About Port Royal Covered Bridge

Port Royal Covered Bridge, also known as Lehman's Covered Bridge, is a beautiful 107-foot covered bridge spanning East Licking Creek just outside Port Royal, Pennsylvania. Built in 1888, this Double Burr Arch Truss bridge is privately owned by the Lehman family but is open to pedestrian visitors. The bridge retains its natural, unpainted wood appearance, giving it a rustic beauty against the forested creek below.

History of Port Royal Covered Bridge

The original Port Royal Covered Bridge was constructed in 1888, though a sign on the bridge indicates 1858. The bridge was severely damaged by Hurricane Agnes in 1972, which devastated much of central Pennsylvania. The Lehman family rebuilt the bridge using a steel stringer structure with the original timber portions built on top. The family has maintained the bridge in excellent condition ever since. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Architecture and Design

The bridge features a Double Burr Arch Truss design, measuring 107 feet in length. It has vertical siding with windows at eave level and a traditional gable roof. The bridge has not been painted, preserving its natural weathered wood appearance that blends beautifully with the surrounding forest. The reconstruction after Hurricane Agnes incorporated modern steel support while maintaining the historic wooden character.
