History of Neddie Woods Covered Bridge
Neddie Woods Covered Bridge was built in 1882 by Lisbon Scott, making it the oldest covered bridge remaining in Greene County. It was named for Edward (Ned or Neddie) W. Wood, a Civil War veteran who owned the land on which the bridge was built. The structure was rehabilitated in 2005 and reinforced with six steel I-beams. Despite sitting only a few miles from downtown Waynesburg, its farm setting makes it feel a world away.
Architecture and Design
The bridge uses a Queenpost Truss design and spans 40 feet over Pursley Creek. It is covered on both sides with unpainted vertical plank siding, featuring a natural weathered wood appearance. The gable roof is covered with corrugated sheet metal, and the bridge rests on cut stone block abutments. The 2005 rehabilitation included reinforcement with six steel I-beams.
Visiting Neddie Woods Covered Bridge
Neddie Woods Covered Bridge is located just off State Route 3013, only a few miles from downtown Waynesburg. Despite its proximity to town, the surrounding farms give it a peaceful, rural atmosphere. The bridge remains open to traffic, though the road sees very little use. There is a small pull-off area next to the main road big enough for a couple of cars. Note that cell phone reception is poor in this area.
