About McClellan Covered Bridge

McClellan Covered Bridge, also known as Kinmuer Bridge, is a historic 53-foot Multiple Kingpost truss bridge spanning the West Fork of Little Beaver Creek in Center Township. Built in 1871, it is one of only two covered bridges in Columbiana County remaining at its original location. The bridge was meticulously restored in 2016-2017.

History of McClellan Covered Bridge

McClellan Covered Bridge was constructed in 1871 as part of McClellan Road, which once connected Wayne Bridge and Trinity Church roads. The road was eventually abandoned, but the bridge remained standing, though neglected for many years. By 2015, a steel beam had to be run across the sagging roof to prevent collapse. County Engineer Bert Dawson, who served 48 years preserving Columbiana County's covered bridges, spearheaded the $280,494 restoration project. McCoy Construction of Calcutta completed the work with assistance from retired Ashtabula County engineer John Smolen. Funding came from the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Historic Covered Bridge Preservation Program ($400,000) and Ohio Public Works Program ($100,000).

Architecture and Design

The bridge features a six-panel Multiple King Post design, measuring 53 feet long and 13 feet wide. The 2016-17 restoration included raising the bridge one foot, constructing one new stone abutment and rebuilding the other, and rehabilitating or replacing fire-retarded wood siding and flooring. Original members were preserved wherever possible.

Visiting McClellan Covered Bridge

The bridge is located southwest of Lisbon in a rural, wooded setting. To visit, follow Route 30 West to Freeman Road, turn left onto Freeman Road, turn right on Lisbon-Dungannon Road, turn left on Trinity Church Road, then slight left onto McClellan Road. The bridge is closed to vehicle traffic but open to pedestrians. A security light illuminates the bridge at night.
