About McCleery Covered Bridge

The McCleery Covered Bridge is a 52-foot Multiple Kingpost structure originally built in 1864 by Jacob 'Blue Jeans' Brandt. It was the first major bridge contract for this renowned builder. The bridge now serves pedestrians on the Lancaster Bike Path (Fairfield Heritage Trail) crossing Fetters Run.

History of McCleery Covered Bridge

Built in 1864, this was the first major bridge contract for Jacob 'Blue Jeans' Brandt, who would go on to build many covered bridges in the region. Originally spanning Walnut Creek, the bridge was originally 97 feet long. In 1983, James Walter moved a section of the bridge to his property. In May 2006, it was rebuilt and moved to its current location on the Lancaster Bike Path. Its timbers are American Chestnut, which is rare in Ohio.

Architecture and Design

The bridge features Multiple Kingpost truss construction with American Chestnut timbers, unusual in Ohio where most covered bridges used white oak or yellow poplar. The current 52-foot span represents a section of the original 97-foot bridge. Exterior wooden braces are unusual features of this bridge.

Visiting McCleery Covered Bridge

The bridge is located on the Lancaster Bike Path (Fairfield Heritage Trail) spanning Fetters Run. It can be accessed from the Ohio University Lancaster area.
