About Manasses Guth Covered Bridge

Manasses Guth Covered Bridge spans 108 feet across Jordan Creek, serving as the first of five covered bridges along this waterway before it flows into the Lehigh River. Located at the eastern end of Covered Bridge Park in South Whitehall Township, this charming bridge remains open to vehicular traffic and features the classic Burr arch truss design with vertical siding.

History of Manasses Guth Covered Bridge

A bridge was originally built at this location in 1858 but was partially destroyed by fire. The bridge you see today was rebuilt in 1882. It was named for Manasses Guth, who lived in the adjacent stone farmhouse and was a relative of Lorentz Guth, the first settler in the area around 1745. The stone house still stands next to the bridge. Just downstream from the bridge is a historic lime kiln, a reminder of the area's industrial past. The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

Architecture and Design

Manasses Guth Covered Bridge utilizes the Burr arch truss design, measuring 108 feet in length. The high arches are visible through side openings, and the bridge features vertical siding characteristic of the region's covered bridges. The structure rests on stone and mortar abutments. The somewhat weathered paint gives the bridge a rustic character that adds to its historic charm.
