About Jacks Hollow Covered Bridge
The Jacks Hollow Covered Bridge, also known as the Nollings Bridge, is a 66-foot Multiple Kingpost Truss span built in 1879, crossing Kents Run on Township Road 108 in Madison Township, Perry County, Ohio. It is the northernmost and longest of the county's three look-alike covered bridges, located in the northeastern corner of Perry County near the community of Mount Perry.
History of Jacks Hollow Covered Bridge
Built in 1879, the Jacks Hollow Covered Bridge is the middle child chronologically among Perry County's three sister bridges, constructed five years after Hopewell Church (1874) and four years before Parks (1883). The bridge is also known by its alternate name, Nollings Bridge. It appears on the Ohio Department of Transportation list of historic covered bridges and has been noted as potentially listed on the National Register of Historic Places, possibly as part of a historic district. Like its sister bridges, it was painted in red, white, and blue for the 1976 Bicentennial celebration.
Architecture and Design
The Jacks Hollow Covered Bridge uses a Multiple Kingpost Truss design with a span of 66 feet, making it the longest of Perry County's three look-alike bridges. Despite the slightly greater length, it shares the same essential design characteristics as the Parks and Hopewell Church bridges, including vertical high-boarded siding, a metal roof, and similar truss construction. All three bridges demonstrate the prevalence and practicality of the Multiple Kingpost design for rural Ohio bridge construction in the late 19th century.
