Horton Mill Covered Bridge

Blount County, near Oneonta. Built 1934, 220 ft. long. Highest covered bridge above a U.S. waterway (70 ft.), NRHP listed.

This 220-foot, double-span bridge crosses the Calvert Prong of the Little Warrior River. Constructed in 1934-35 by a 15-man crew supervised by Talmedge Horton, Forrest Tidwell, and Zelmer Tidwell, it replaced an 1894 bridge located about 3/4 mile downstream that provided access to Thurman Horton's mill complex. The bridge employs a Town Lattice truss design. Standing 70 feet above the gorge, it holds the distinction of being the highest covered bridge above any United States waterway. It was the first covered bridge in the South to be added to the National Register of Historic Places, on December 29, 1970. The bridge underwent restoration in 1974 and again after vandalism in 2007, reopening in March 2013. As of April 1, 2022, it was closed to vehicular traffic and is now open to pedestrians. It is owned by the Alabama Historical Commission.
