About Hewitt Covered Bridge

Hewitt Covered Bridge is an 88-foot Burr Arch Truss bridge built in 1879 in one of the most remote locations in Pennsylvania. Located near the Maryland border south of Chaneysville, it crosses Town Creek and is remarkably well-preserved.

History of Hewitt Covered Bridge

Hewitt Covered Bridge was built in 1879 and is county-owned. It is located in the village of Hewitt, less than three miles north of the Mason-Dixon Line. The bridge is along the road to McElfish's Mill on Township Route 326. Despite its extremely remote location—perhaps the most isolated covered bridge in Pennsylvania—it has been remarkably well-preserved and remains open to traffic.

Architecture and Design

The bridge uses a Burr Arch Truss design and spans 88.5 feet over Town Creek. It has a width of 14 feet. The sides are almost completely covered with vertical boards on the outside. The bridge rests on stone and mortar abutments. It is painted a beautiful white color with unique red accents around the edges, giving it a distinctive appearance.

Visiting Hewitt Covered Bridge

Hewitt Covered Bridge is located in Clearville, Pennsylvania, about 20 miles south of Route 30 and only about 3 miles north of the Maryland/Pennsylvania border. It can also be accessed from Interstate 68 in Flintstone, Maryland, about 6 miles to the south. Parking is easy with plenty of room to pull off to the side of the road along its western side. The remote location and quality preservation make this one of the most rewarding covered bridges to photograph in Pennsylvania.
