About Heikes Covered Bridge
Heikes Covered Bridge is a historic 67-foot covered bridge located in Huntington Township, Adams County, north of Gettysburg. Built in 1892, this Burr Arch Truss bridge crosses Bermudian Creek. While located on private property, the bridge is positioned close enough to Willow Road that it can be viewed from the public roadway.
History of Heikes Covered Bridge
Constructed in 1892 by an unknown builder, Heikes Covered Bridge served the rural agricultural community between York Springs and Heidlersburg for nearly a century. The bridge was bypassed in 1985 and is now used for farm equipment storage by the property owners. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 as one of 17 covered bridges in the Adams, Cumberland, and Perry Counties historic bridge group.
Architecture and Design
The bridge features a Burr Arch Truss design, measuring 67 feet in length and 14 feet in width. The Burr Truss combines an arch with a multiple kingpost truss, a design that became the most common for covered bridges in Pennsylvania. Despite being used for storage, the bridge appears to be in good condition and well-maintained by its private owners.
Visiting Heikes Covered Bridge
Heikes Covered Bridge is located along Willow Road (Route 585), approximately halfway between York Springs and Heidlersburg, and about 0.2 miles east of State Route 1016.
