About Harshman Covered Bridge

The Harshman Covered Bridge is a 109-foot Childs Truss covered bridge carrying Concord-Fairhaven Road over Four Mile Creek in Dixon Township near Fairhaven. Built in 1894 by Everett S. Sherman, this white-painted bridge is located in one of the most scenic and secluded parts of Preble County, about 4 miles from the Indiana border. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 and documented by the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) in 2003.

History of Harshman Covered Bridge

E.S. Sherman constructed this bridge in 1894 at a cost of $3,184, with masonry work completed by J.M. Acton using stone from the Stony Point quarry. The bridge was named for J.P. Harshman, a nearby landowner. Between December 2007 and May 2008, the bridge underwent a $340,000 rehabilitation.

Architecture and Design

The Harshman Bridge is a 109-foot Childs Truss design, the longest of the Sherman-built bridges remaining in Preble County. The Childs Truss is unique in that Ohio has the only known covered bridges of this type in the nation.

Visiting Harshman Covered Bridge

Located on Concord-Fairhaven Road between Eaton and Hueston Woods State Park. The secluded setting, with chirping crickets and singing birds, makes it a peaceful stop.
