History of Glessner Covered Bridge

Glessner Covered Bridge was constructed in 1881 and has served the community for over 140 years. It was refurbished in 1998 and remains in excellent condition. The bridge is located near the historic town of Shanksville, which gained national significance as the crash site of United Flight 93 on September 11, 2001.

Architecture and Design

While some sources incorrectly list it as a Burr Arch Truss, Glessner Covered Bridge actually uses a Kingpost Truss design. At 90 feet in length, it efficiently spans the Stonycreek River. The bridge features the traditional covered bridge appearance and is one of the more photogenic bridges in Somerset County.

Visiting Glessner Covered Bridge

Glessner Covered Bridge is located along the fittingly named Covered Bridge Road in Stoneycreek Township, near Shanksville. It is only a short drive from the Flight 93 National Memorial, making it easy to combine both sites into a single visit. There are pull-offs on both sides of the bridge for parking. The bridge remains open to vehicular traffic.
