History of Fischtner Covered Bridge
Fischtner Covered Bridge was originally built in 1880 and once served as part of the main roadway before it was bypassed. Today, it only provides access to a group of private homes. The bridge is privately owned and features no trespassing signs, though it can still be viewed from the public road. It is located less than four miles from the Mason-Dixon Line and about 20 minutes north of Cumberland, Maryland.
Architecture and Design
The bridge uses a Multiple Kingpost Truss design, one of only two covered bridges in Bedford County not using a Burr Arch Truss. At 56 feet, it is the shortest of Bedford County's covered bridges. The low-side walls make for a striking appearance quite different from most Pennsylvania covered bridges. The Kingpost design was commonly used for shorter spans.
