About Dreibelbis Station Covered Bridge
Dreibelbis Station Covered Bridge is one of the most impressive covered bridges in Berks County, stretching 172 feet across Maiden Creek. Built in 1869, this substantial structure connects Greenwich and Windsor Townships and remains open to vehicular traffic. The bridge is notable for its decorative stepped portals featuring traditional Pennsylvania Dutch hex signs, making it one of the most photogenic covered bridges in the region.
History of Dreibelbis Station Covered Bridge
The bridge was petitioned by Manasses Dreibelbis, who owned a saw mill and clover mill on the east bank of Maiden Creek, along with Samuel Fisher who owned land on the west bank. Local craftsmen Simon Dreibelbis and Charles Kutz built the bridge in 1869 after several contractors withdrew their bids. The name Dreibelbis Station comes from the nearby train stop on the Schuylkill and Lehigh Railroad that came through in 1874. The bridge underwent a major $5.48 million rehabilitation from 2019-2020, during which it was dismantled and rebuilt with new timbers while preserving its historic character. New hex signs painted by Eric Claypoole replaced the originals painted by his father Johnny Claypoole.
Architecture and Design
Dreibelbis Station Covered Bridge features a double Burr arch truss design, providing exceptional strength for its 172-foot span. The bridge is significant for both its sturdy truss construction and its decorative portal treatment. The stepped, false-front portals are excellent examples of the aesthetic customary for bridges in this area. The bridge measures 16 feet wide and utilizes stone abutments. Pennsylvania Dutch hex signs at each portal symbolize good luck and add cultural significance to the structure.
