History of Carmichaels Covered Bridge
Carmichaels Covered Bridge was built in 1889 and has served the community for well over a century. The bridge was rehabilitated in 1998 and remains in excellent condition. It holds special significance as one of the original sites of the annual Covered Bridge Festival, which has been held in Washington and Greene Counties since 1970. The town of Carmichaels itself dates back to 1767 when James Carmichael first settled the area.
Architecture and Design
The bridge uses a Queenpost Truss design, the most common truss type in Greene County. At 64 feet long, it spans Muddy Creek. The bridge features vertical board and batten siding and a gable roof covered with raised-seam tin. The abutments are cut stone and mortar reinforced with concrete, with additional diagonal timbers reinforcing the truss. A beautiful white picket fence leads up to the bridge entrance.
Visiting Carmichaels Covered Bridge
Carmichaels Covered Bridge is located just outside the heart of Carmichaels, Pennsylvania, in a residential area rather than rural farmland. This gives it a unique feel among Greene County bridges. Parking is tricky as the bridge is surrounded by homes; the best option is to park along North Market Street and walk the hundred yards to the bridge. The nearby Hartley Inn is recommended for dining.
