About Barronvale Covered Bridge

Barronvale Covered Bridge is the longest covered bridge in Somerset County at 162 feet. This rare dual-span Burr Arch Truss bridge crosses Laurel Hill Creek and dates to 1902, though some sources claim earlier construction dates.

History of Barronvale Covered Bridge

There is considerable dispute about the construction date of Barronvale Covered Bridge. A sign on the bridge claims 1830, but this is unlikely as it would predate settlement of the area. Other dates floated include 1845-1846. The most reliable date is 1902, when the current structure was built by Cassimer Cramer at a cost of $300. Significant repairs including wooden Burr Arch trusses were completed in 1907. Also known as Barron's Mill Bridge, it is the furthest upstream of the three covered bridges crossing Laurel Hill Creek.

Architecture and Design

The bridge features a rare dual-span Burr Arch Truss design. At 162 feet and 3 inches in length and 13 feet 10 inches wide, it is the longest covered bridge in Somerset County and one of the longest in Pennsylvania. An interesting architectural note: because the pier underneath is not centered, the arches are of different heights. The bridge is privately owned but open to pedestrian traffic.
